Introduction

In this chapter, you will learn why people decide to join online groups. You will also learn how to find them besides social media and what search engines you can use to do so.

Explanation

Anna already feels confident when using a computer and the Internet, so she decided that it is the right time to meet some new people. She is not interested in meeting single people; she prefers to find groups that share similar interests to hers.

Why do people create groups online?

There are many reasons why people decide to create or join online groups. Honestly, there can be as many reasons as people in the world.

What do you think? Would you like to join an online group? Why?

You can think about it now or later. Now let’s see some of these reasons.

Click each person’s head to discover their reasons.

Can you see it now? For some people, online groups are like any other social group (the difference is that they rarely or never see each other besides the Internet)

Different search engines

Without a doubt, Google is the best-known search engine, but did you know that there are also other ones? Moreover, each search engine has something that makes it unique.

Test your knowledge on search engines and their properties.

Where can I find local groups?

The simplest way to find a local group is to search your city or town on social media, maybe even on the social media of your local government. The problem is that not all the groups may want the local government to promote them.

You can also try to find them using search engines or, more traditionally, by asking your colleagues or family if they know any.

When searching for them on your own, the most important are keywords.

When searching for local groups, it is good to use any words that can bring you even a little bit closer to them. Any words that are somehow related to those groups can be keywords that will help us in our search.
