Introduction

After the previous sessions, you probably already know how important it is to be able to tell stories and how to create them. But for a story to truly come alive, you need to know in which format to present it and on which platform it is best to share it. Today, you will get to know different storytelling formats and understand which digital platform is most suitable for publishing your stories.

Storytelling Formats

A story can be conveyed in different forms.

Text – a simple and accessible format that allows you to describe important details in depth and create a complete picture in the reader’s mind. Text is easy to share, it can be used on various digital platforms, and it can also be printed and kept on paper. Text works well for recording memories and documenting events.

Photo stories – each of us certainly has many photos through which hundreds of different stories can be told! You can create a photo story of your family, a photo timeline of important life events, and much more. Photos can strongly convey emotions and transport us to different times and places. In addition, they are convenient to share on social media!

Video stories – create a more vivid, almost kaleidoscopic picture of the events you are telling about. You can record videos (memories, dreams, opinions, etc.) of your relatives, friends, or yourself. You can also go live in your video blog and talk to people from all over the world!

Audio (podcasts) – allow people to listen to your stories anywhere, even while walking down the street or cooking in the kitchen. This format is especially suitable for those who, for some reason, feel shy or uncomfortable in front of a video camera.

The above are basic formats, but there are others too! Infographics, interactive long-reads, comics – all of these can also be used to tell your stories wonderfully.

Remember: the format influences how a story will be perceived and what effect it will have. So choose your format carefully!

Digital Platforms for Storytelling

Once you have decided on the format of your stories, it’s time to think about which digital platforms you will publish them on.
Each platform has its own rules and audience. Have a look at the overview of the main platforms in this presentation and choose the ones you like the most!

Summary

Format and platform are tools – and choosing them correctly determines whether your story will be read and whether it will truly engage those who read, listen to or watch it.
