Multimedia in Learning and Training

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the theory and practice of multimedia in education and training. It explores how multimedia elements—such as text, audio, video, graphics, and interactive components—can be combined to support effective, engaging, and inclusive learning experiences.

Grounded in key learning theories (e.g. Cognitive Load Theory, Dual Coding Theory, and Multimedia Learning Theory by Mayer), the course explains how well-designed multimedia can enhance understanding, retention, and learner motivation.

Participants will explore practical tools and platforms such as CANVA for visual design and H5P for creating interactive learning content (quizzes, videos, timelines, etc.). These examples help learners create pedagogically sound and visually appealing materials without advanced technical skills.

The course also covers guidelines for implementing multimedia effectively (based on R. Mayer’s principles), including:

  • Choosing the right format for different learning objectives.
  • Ensuring accessibility and inclusion (e.g. captions, alternative text).
  • Structuring content to reduce cognitive overload.
  • Aligning multimedia with learning outcomes and learner needs.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to plan, create, and integrate multimedia content into their own educational or training contexts confidently and creatively.
